Allocation of North Thames DeNDRoN Resources
North Thames DeNDRoN is allocated approximately £500,000 annually by the Department of Health through the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network. Over 90% of these funds are used for staff costs, to support and facilitate dementia and neurodegenerative disease clinical research in the North Thames region.
In accordance with DeNDRoN Coordinating Centre policy, North Thames DeNDRoN has been operating a ‘mixed model’ of staffing support, with a core team of centralised Clinical Research Officers (CROs) (one for each disease area) and staff embedded in research active NHS Trusts.
In each financial year (running April – March) it is envisaged that approximately 75% of resources will be allocated to established research sites and 25% to new research sites and/or Principal Investigators (PIs).
Established research sites or PIs that consistently bring in new studies and recruit patients successfully may be allocated funding for a North Thames DeNDRoN ‘embedded’ worker to help with study set-up and patient recruitment. The amount of funding or time allocated will be related to recruitment figures from the previous year and weighted according to the complexity of the study (see diagram for guidance).

Embedded staff can be part or fully funded by North Thames DeNDRoN. Funding will be subject to a service level agreement and reviewed annually.
New sites or PIs may be supported by our centralised CROs on an ad hoc basis, until they are established.
