Ministerial group on dementia research established
9 November 2009
At the fourth UK Dementia Congress on 5th November , Phil Hope, Minister of State for Care Services, announced that he is establishing a ministerial working group on dementia research.
Following on from the Dementia Research Summit in July 2009, the ministerial group is being established to provide the necessary leadership to push forward the research agenda, and encourage the progress in dementia research.
Phil Hope said:
“A cure for cancer is traditionally seen as the Holy Grail of medical science. But in an ageing world where more and more of us will succumb to dementia, we need to view a cure for dementia in a similar light.
But it’s not just about cure – the group will look into the cause and care of all kinds of dementia too, and the Dementia Research Summit described a number of issues to take forward.”
Martin Rossor, Director of NIHR DeNDRoN will be a member of the ministerial group.
