Applying for Writing Group support

The DeNDRoN Coordinating Centre invites applications for Writing Group support from groups of collaborators who are planning to write a grant application that is:
  • eligible for the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio
  • for a minimum of £250,0001
  • for a multi-centre study that will include sites in at least three Local Research Networks (LRNs) in England2,3
  • predominantly concerned with research for which DeNDRoN is the Lead Network within the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network4

Applicants should consider the following:

  • Are the research aims and objectives of the Writing Group clearly stated?
  • Is the study team appropriately qualified in terms of expertise and track record?5
  • Is the level of patient and public involvement appropriate or does the group require assistance from DeNDRoN?
  • Are the methods proposed appropriate?
  • Are the outcome measures stated?
  • Is the recruitment target realistic?

Please note:

1. Collaborators writing applications for less than £250,000 are encouraged to contact their local NIHR Research Design Service for support

2. Writing Groups may include collaborators from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

3. It is not expected that all groups will already have all their eventual Principle Investigators identified at the application stage. DeNDRoN can help identify appropriate sites for inclusion in the study.

4. DeNDRoN is the Lead Network for all studies on the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio in dementia, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, Huntington’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases such as PSP and MSA. Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions are led by the NIHR Nervous Systems Disorders Specialty Group. Queries relating to support in developing research in these areas should be addressed to the NIHR Clinical Research Network Coordinating Centre in the first instance.

5. Groups are expected to be multi-disciplinary but are not expected to have all the expertise they may require to develop the grant proposal at application stage. DeNDRoN can support the identification of additional expertise to join Writing Groups if requested.
